Professionals. Kind Of ;)

Friday. 4:30 PM. 97 Degrees. Me, Brian, tennis, the river, the little boy. What? The little boy? Where did that come from?

Let me back up a bit. Me and Brian went to play are usual pretend tennis games at Howard Amon at 4:30 this afternoon. We were both overheated before we even stepped onto the courts so we made a deal. 3 games, then we jump off the dock. 3 terribly embarrassing games later, (hey, I didnt lose THAT bad) we gathered the balls (which Brian hit over the fence) and put them in their correct containers. A deal's a deal. So we started walking towards the river when a little boy walks past and says "hey nice tennis game, I was watching the whole time." I kinda laughed to myself because I couldn't tell if he was being serious or not. (Let me be honest...it was sort of a brutal loss) But instead of ignoring him I said "hey thanks kid." He stopped. "It was a great game, you guys must be professional." Was he being SERIOUS? I couldn't help myself by this point. I looked at Brian and started to laugh. "We are professionals actually. It takes great skill to get where we are." (Brian by this point was embarrassed but the good kind of embarrassed. The kind that makes you feel good but either way you turn red.) The boy just smiled and kept walking with his little friend. "Well, see ya!" He yelled as we walked away. Now, I'm guessing that boy was about 7, and for a 7 year old to make my day so quickly, well it gives me hope for the future. Who knows, maybe he'll grow up to be a professional tennis player. The day he wins the French open is the day he annouces to the world who inspired him to play in the first place. And that's me and Brian.

One last thing. Jumping off the dock with a good friend, at the end of summer, in the sweltering heat, laughing about absolutely nothing, makes me realize that summer wasn't all that bad. And boring things can become fun things if you're in the right company. :)
